Place the CDFF, concave side in, against your bare shin so that the top of the CDFF is at least 2 inches below the bottom of your knee. Placement downward can vary, but the bottom edge of the CDFF must be at least 3 inches above the top of your ankle.

Operating Instructions and Proper Use of the Cold Diffusion Fatigue Fighter

1) Prior to the use of this device, please read this accompanying background material.

2) Remove the CDFF from its packaging and inspect the exposed white square device on the concave side of the CDFF. It should be free of any cracks or holes. If there are cracks and holes, the CDFF has been damaged in shipment and cannot be used. Next, inspect the DC power cord and check the adaptor plug for damage.

3) The DC power supply cord can be plugged directly into any automotive power point or into an AC to DC converter. If you are using a power converter, plug the DC supply cord into the converter and then plug the AC to DC converter directly into any household AC plug.

4) Once you are powered up, touch the square chilling device. It should be very cold to the touch instantly. If it is not very cold to the touch, your CDFF has been damaged in shipment and cannot be used.

5) Place the CDFF, concave side in, against your bare shin DIRECTLY ON THE SHIN BONE so that the top of the CDFF is at least 2 inches below the bottom of your knee. Placement downward can vary, but the bottom edge of the CDFF must be at least 3 inches above the top of your ankle.

a. Ideally, the CDFF should be roughly centered between your shin and your ankle, depending on what is comfortable to you.

b. If used while driving (in countries where the steering wheel is on the left hand side), we recommend that the CDFF be worn on the right shin to avoid the risk of entangling the legs with the power cord.

c. The CDFF operates with the grill end on the top.

6) At the proper height, shift the CDFF from side to side until the chilled square device is flush against and covering your shin bone.

7) Securely fix the Velcro straps tight enough to hold the CDFF in place but not so tight as to interfere with the circulation in your leg.

8) If operating equipment or driving, 3 minutes for the physiological effects to take place before proceeding.

9) Since all human bodies have some variance, you may or may not feel obvious physical effects. Please understand that the primary effect is to keep you awake and as alert as during daylight hours. The effects may be, in short, a bit "underwhelming". However, in 100% of our test subjects, one or more of the following effects occurred:

a. A sensation of the entire body being slightly colder

b. A sensation of one or both legs feeling slightly colder

c. The stomach feeling slightly warmer or colder and then a sensation of the stomach reversing this temperature

d. Some heightened awareness of surroundings and faster trains of thought

e. A slight sense of annoyance or restlessness

10) The CDFF will next cycle through a series of temperature sequences, roughly on a 15 minute cycle. Based on the human body’s need for sleep and the nature of fatigue, we recommend not using the device for more than two hours. Although the CDFF has been tested past this two hour limit and continues to prevent sleep as well as to increase alertness levels, continuous sleep deprivation is not the design intent for the device. If a user of the CDFF exceeds our recommended limit, errors of judgment related to sleep deprivation (as opposed to drowsiness and fatigue) may constitute an increasing risk to the user.

11) When you are finished using the CDFF, remove it from your leg first and then unplug it from the power point. DO NOT leave the CDFF on your leg after it has been unplugged. (The solid state cooler will heat slightly once it has been powered down.)

12) Our tested population only included healthy adults and the CDFF has been designed for use ONLY BY HEALTHY ADULTS. For obvious reasons, it has not been and will not be tested on children or expectant women. Always remember that the CDFF is not a substitute for sleep. It is also not designed for individuals with illnesses or medical conditions requiring drug therapy to regulate brain function or to counter the inability of the body to regulate or control core body temperature. It is not designed for individuals using medication or other drugs that may affect alertness or sleep. If disrupting core body temperatures does not affect a CDFF user’s ability to sleep, medical attention is likely warranted and a doctor should be consulted as soon as possible.

Imperative Guidelines for Proper Use

Always remember that a sleepy or fatigued driver is a danger to himself (or herself) and to others. You should never drive when you are sleepy or excessively fatigued even though the CDFF won't let you fall asleep while driving. The CDFF keeps you awake and increases alertness relative to the normal fatigue and drowsiness felt at night. It will not make you more alert than you would ordinarily be during daylight hours.

IT IS NOT INTENDED AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR SLEEP. If the CDFF is used as a substitute for sleep or rest, it is an improper usage. Most accidents and fatalities related to fatigue occur when a driver knows he or she is becoming sleepy and is just going that “extra bit of distance” before stopping for the night. The CDFF will help you get there safely.

Proper use of the CDFF does not entail purposefully going without sleep for long periods of time or using the CDFF to extend a period of sleeplessness. Going without sleep for extended periods of time is harmful to the body and must be avoided. Using the CDFF when you are at risk of falling asleep while driving at night and intend to stop soon for proper rest is the design intent for the CDFF.

In order to use the CDFF properly, follow these basic rules:

  • Don’t drive if you know you are sleepy or excessively fatigued.
  • If you already feel drowsy while you are driving, pull off the road and get some sleep.
  • Understand that if you are already fatigued from a lack of sleep, your judgment may already be impaired due to a lack of sleep or an excess of fatigue.
  • Instead of waiting until you get drowsy, if you think that you are AT RISK of becoming drowsy, attach the CDFF to your bare shin and turn it on. The CDFF has a programmed cycle that uses temperature variations to prevent your body from establishing the core body temperature required for sleep. You simply won't fall asleep while using the device. There is also a documented 25% to 40% alertness increase in fatigued individuals during night time conditions.
  • This device has only been extensively tested at two hours although it has now been shown to be effective in limited field tests lasting longer than eight hours. It is not intended to allow you to stay awake indefinitely. Always remember that is it dangerous to go without sleep for long periods of time.
  • If used as recommended, the CDFF will keep you from falling asleep at the wheel, make you more alert while driving at night or when fatigued, and allow you to get safely home or to the next rest stop where you can stop and get sleep.
